Mynydd Hiraethog Mountain Biking Routes Summary

Mynydd Hiraethog is an area of high moorland between Snowdonia and the Clwydian hills that is reasonably flat once you get up there! Adding to the interest are the reservoirs of Brenig and Alwen, as well as the forestry. For such a man made landscape, the routes are not manufactured and may invovle a bit of map work to find your way around.

Trail Centre Details

Mynydd Hiraethog is certainly not a MTB destination on most biker’s wish list. It lacks the technicality of the trail centres, and has no waymarked trails. What it does boast is more physically demanding routes as well as a mix of easy family routes. One for the less technical rider looking to step up, or for those looking to get the distance in without reverting to road cycling. This includes a couple of Blue graded routes that will give you a proper workout as well as two tough red routes that include some technical sections.

Mynydd Hiraethog is also home to the members only Foel Gasnach DH track, near the vilage of Cyffylliog.

Facilities:

Mynydd Hiraethog’s main centre is at Llyn Brenig, though many of the routes mentioned can be accessed from the small villages on the perimeter such as Cyffylliog and Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. The Llyn Brenig Visitor Centre is the main facility, boasting a cafe, toilets and parking. There’s also a pub nearby, The Sportsmans Arms*, which is in a beautifully remote location and an option for basing yourself to explore the Hiraethog area.
